Historically speaking, the Supraphon music publishing house is the most important Czech gramophone recording company. The label Supraphon -originally the name of a type of electronic gramophone player that was quite modern in its day - was registered in 1932. In the post-war years it appeared on Czechoslovak gramophone records produced for export, which helped to spread the good repute of primarily Czech classical music through recordings made during the 1930s and 40s. The adventurous programming of those days gave rise to an extensive catalogue of titles that systematically documents the musical oeuvres of Bedrich Smetana, Antonín Dvorák, Leoš Janácek and other figures in Czech music, as well as of the world's musical 'greats'. Recordings were made by leading Czech and world concert artists, chamber groups and other musical ensembles under the direction of celebrated conductors.

In the continued course of its development Supraphon became an export publisher (in 1949), a producer (Supraphon Gramophone Production, 1961) and an independent publishing house (Supraphon national enterprises, 1969), and eventually - on account of the company's increasing influence - its name actually came to be synonymous with the Czech gramophone industry. ...Quelle:
