Gamage was produced
by The British Homophone Company for A. W.
Gamage Ltd, of Holborn, London. They are very rare
nowadays and little is known
about
what may be found on this label, or for how long it was available.
They use the same source of masters as Homochord, i.e. English
Vocalion, American Vocalion and possibly Emerson, too. The catalogue
numbers are in a G-600 series. Quelle
It was founded by Arthur Walter Gamage, a Herefordshire farmers son for the princely sum of £40 in 1878. Together with a friend, one Frank Spain, they made £1,632 in their first years trading. Over the years, Gamage, who bought Spain out, acquired small buildings all around his original property to add to his empire. He seemed to sell everything from shoe laces to motor cars and there was even a zoological department. Arthur Gamage died in 1930. The store continued trading but in 1970 was the premises were acquired for a £20 million redevelopment scheme and trading ceased in 1972. Quelle
